“And you think this is a good idea, Brother?” D’Brouchart frowned at the phone and then at Armand de Bleu who stood looking at him from the other side of his desk. The young Knight was uncomfortable in the Master’s quarters.
“I do,” the Knight of the Apocalypse who Sees answered him from Switzerland. “The place he is in is deplorable. I believe that he would be better cared for in Berne. I could check on his progress personally if he were closer.”
“You know what we may have to do,” the Grand Master shuddered. There was no doubt in his mind that John Paul’s son was the one spoken of in the prophecy. The evil child. The spawn of Satan. Certainly, Simon’s daughter, Oriel, did not fit the description and she was doing quite well. He had just gotten a progress report from her parents the day before. They had already enrolled her in one of the city’s finest private primary schools for the gifted and talented. And the Ritter’s son was a quiet, reflective boy, already showing signs of an exceptional intelligence and good humor. His parents were teaching him to read Latin and he was excelling in mathematics. But John Paul’s son… it was a shame.
“I am aware of that, your Grace,” von Hetz sighed into the phone. “I am thankful that Sir John has shown no interest in the boy. He would be devastated to learn of his condition. We may have to make arrangements for him… permanently.”
“He never asks you about the child?” the Master asked. D’Brouchart had heard this before, but had a hard time believing that the Knight could show so little interest in his son no matter what the circumstances of his birth.
“Never. He refuses to speak of the child even when I have ventured to broach the subject with him,” the Ritter told him for the hundredth time.
“Then he must have known all along,” d’Brouchart said and let go a long breath. He nodded to de Bleu and the Knight fetched a bottle of mineral water from the small refrigerator in the Master’s bedroom. “How do you propose to arrange this, Brother?”
“I have already made the arrangements, your Grace. I was merely awaiting your permission to proceed. We should make sure that he is well cared for until we can ascertain the truth. He is only six years old. There’s still time.”
“Yes.” D’Brouchart took the water and turned it up to take a great swallow. “There is time. You will keep me posted and I want details, Ritter.”
“Of course, your Grace,” the Ritter answered quickly. He was greatly relieved that the Master had agreed to give the child some time. He remembered when it would not have been so.
The Grand Master punched the button on the phone after the farewells and handed the remote to de Bleu.
“How goes it with you, my son?” He studied the golden-eyed Knight curiously. He was always fascinated by Armand de Bleu’s unusual eye color.
“Well, your Grace,” Armand said noncommittally and bowed his head slightly.
